 OPTION 2: Introduction to XR

For my unity tutorial 02, I went with option 2. Personally, I love VR and the technology behind it. 




EVALUATION OF XR APPLICATION


Beat Saber is a VR based Rhythm game. using two coloured sabers, you must cut the blocks coming towards you with the correct colour and direction.

The target audience for this game is young gamers who are new to VR. Beat Saber is a brilliant game for new players as it gets around the current locomotion problem by bringing all the objects towards the player, instead of having the user move around the virtual world.

Beat Saber is a VR application using 6DOF. Beat Saber is only available through PCVR or standalone VR like on the Meta Quest 2. Due to Beat Saber only being on these platforms it's able to take advantage of the hardware available creating a very beautiful game that people can easily spend hours playing without getting fatigued or motion sickness.

Currently, Beat Saber does not take advantage of any external technology. However, using an external application called LIV (available on the Steam marketplace) the user bring themselves into the virtual world using either a green screen with a camera or FBT (Full body tracking) as I don't have access to a green screen the only method I was able to try out was FBT using the Tundra Trackers.

The biggest strength Beat Saber has over most VR applications is it doesn't require Locomotion. Currently, Locomotion is a big problem in VR as the only way to currently do move around is using an analogue stick on one of the controllers. Beat Saber doesn't require the user to move around letting them become a lot more immersed in the game as their play space is the only area they will be moving in.

The biggest improvement For Beat Saber is for them to acknowledge the modding community and assist with the main mod developers to ensure the mods are kept up to date and also add features that the modding community spent hours working on free of charge.

Beat Saber is an amazing VR game and should be on the top of the list for any new Gamers getting into the VR world and community.

Brainstorm an XR application Idea

  • horror game trapped in a building with monsters.

1.
WORKING TITLE:
ShootVR

TYPE OF XR PLATFORM AND TARGET AUDIENCE:
VR game for PCVR so it can fully utilise the capabilities of modern computers. With the finger tracking available for Quest 2 and Valve Index used for immersion.

ELEVATOR PITCH:
You and your comrades must defend the location from people who wish to damage the area by blowing up the area's collection of resources. It is up to you and your teammates to stop this at any cost.

VISUAL REFERENCE:
ShootVR takes huge inspiration from the extremely popular competitive shooter Counter-Strike. Keeping the idea of a tactical time-based shooter but bringing that concept into VR.

WORKING TITLE:
Keep Moving Foward

TYPE OF XR PLATFORM AND TARGET AUDIENCE:
VR application for PCVR and Standalone VR on the Quest 2

ELEVATOR PITCH:
You are being hunted. You have the information that they want. You need to use the high rise buildings to get out of the city safely without them getting to you.

VISUAL REFERENCE:
This title is inspired by the popular game Mirror's Edge. using the parkour concepts created in the game and bringing them into VR. allowing users to really feel as if they are travelling across skyscrapers and getting all the sensations that come along with that.







3.
WORKING TITLE:
Oasis

TYPE OF XR PLATFORM AND TARGET AUDIENCE:
VR application for Mobile, standalone, PSVR and PCVR.

ELEVATOR PITCH:
Why go through all the effort of going to the cinema when you can do it from the comfort of your own couch. by using the oasis, you are able to watch movies at home as they come out in the cinema. To make it better it will feel like you are still in the cinema.

VISUAL REFERENCE:
Currently, the best way to show my idea is by using a screenshot from the popular application Virtual Desktop. Letting the user have a virtual screen any size and distance from them.
